The term single-layer materials or two-Dimensional (2D)-materials refers to crystalline solids consistent of a single layer of atoms (i.e. atomically-thin) in thickness and spaning from a few hundreds of nanometers to microns in lateral dimension.

2D-materials are of extensive interest due to their excellent elevated mobility, conductivity and mechanical strength. They also have long spin diffusion length for spintronics devices. The expectation is that 2D-materials will replace conventional semiconductors to deliver a new generation of electronics.

Many researchers focus mainly on 2D-materials in a mono-compositional form such as graphene. However, multicomponent 2D-materials have novel properties such as magnetic, semiconductor and spin behavior, achieving high sensitivity, superior functional coatings, nanotherapeutics, advanced catalytic reactivity, mechanical strength for composite materials reinforcement, multifunctional inks for printed electronics and high power efficiency systems.
